365 Q&A #69: A Chance Meeting

Chance encounters. Isn't that how we all image meeting the love of our life. It's basically how every rom-com starts. Boy meets girl. They fall in love and live happily ever after. Today's writing prompt asked me to do the same. Enjoy.

Finally the day had come for the book release. SUE, a young woman in her late 20s/early 30s makes her way into her local bookstore.

SUE

God I hope they still have this book.

Shortly after DENNIS, a young man in his mid 30s enters the book store looking frantic.

DENNIS

I hope it's still here. Had to wait a few days for my

paycheck to come through.

They both head to the back of the book store brushing past an antique rotary phone, some old Victorian furniture and aisles of literature that are carefully categorized. Both Sue and Dennis rapidly head down the science fiction aisle and each put a hand on the last copy.

SUE

Ummm. What are you doing?

DENNIS

Getting this book. What are you doing?

SUE

Getting THIS book.

DENNIS

Ha. You're cute. I had it first.

SUE

Pretty sure I had my hand on it first.

A MANAGER comes to the aisle to see what all the commotion is about.

DENNIS

You got anymore of these in the back?

MANAGER

That's the last one. Won't get another shipment of those

for another month or so.

SUE

I am not waiting that long.

She tugs on the book. Dennis tugs back.

DENNIS

This is my favorite series. No way I'm

giving this up.

SUE

Really? What caused Selene to become so dark and twisted.

DENNIS

She goes by The Angel of Death now and everyone knows

that she lost control of her powers after Graham killed her

beloved Bret right before her very eyes. She then proceeded

to rip him to shreds.

Sue's impressed but doesn't want it to show.

SUE

Her parent's names?

DENNIS

Never stated in the books but in an excerpt from a novella

on the author's website it states that her parent's names were

Evangeline and Adriel. One could say this is a play on Adam and

Eve but those who read further into the author and the characters

know that Adriel means bringer of death and destruction while

Evangeline means bringer of good news. This is a reverse play on

Adam and Eve, Adam being the one who eats the forbidden fruit. This is where Selene's dark energy comes from. Her light comes

from her mother. Both of her parents were very powerful beings.

Sue's mouth practically drops to the floor. Dennis smiles with pride.

SUE

So what do we do now?

DENNIS

How about I buy us some coffees and we read it together. Unless you

have something better to do?

SUE

Nearest coffee place is about a block away.

The pair go to the front desk and check out.

MANAGER

You two enjoy!

DENNIS/SUE

We will.

The pair exit the book store and head to the coffee house for a night filled with their favorite characters.
